New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said he will fulfill all expectations of the people of India.
Modi was speaking at the Bharatiya Janata Party's first national council meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here.
Modi termed Rajnath Singh the "captain" and Amit Shah the "man of the match" of the BJP team that won 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Exhorting party workers to work for the betterment of people, Modi said,"People have given their verdict, it is our turn now; We will adequately fulfill the aspirations of people."
Taking a dig at the Congress party for questioning NDA government's achievement, Modi said, "Those who have not done anything for 60 years are asking for our account of 60 days."
"In 60 days, things have started moving; We will be successful in bringing about a change," added Modi.
Modi also said that the world's opinion has changed about India because people have given a clear majority to the BJP led alliance.
"Outlook of the world towards India has changed because there is government with full majority; it reposes confidence in them," Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi suggested to the new president Amit Shah that after he forms his new team, he should think over BJP dedicating each year to promote social causes like energy conservation, toilets, girl child education.
"Every party worker should work on programmes on the social issue for a particular year," he said.
"For instance, one year can be dedicated to energy saving...the next to building toilets in villages...," he said.
Modi also attacked Congress for signing a WTO agreement that was not in favour of poor people of the country.
"Those who asked for votes in the name of food security bill signed a WTO agreement that went against ensuring bread for poor of the country," said Modi.
Modi further said the country is greater than the party.
"Hamare liye dal se badhkar desh hai. (For us, country is greater than the party)," said Modi.
Speaking in Hindi, Modi said that during the Emergency, he along with other leaders sacrificed the Jana Sangh for the country, thinking "desh ka hit" (national welfare) was "supreme".
Modi also said the BJP will not tolerate any act of violence that affects the nation.
Modi said he neither had knowledge about the "geography" of parliament nor about the streets of Delhi.
"I did not know the geography of parliament, and did not know about the 'gali mohalla' (streets and colonies) of Delhi," Modi said.
"People thought what will he do in Delhi... even I thought so...," Modi said at the Bharatiya Janata Party's first national council meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here.
Earlier, Amit Shah whose election as party president was ratified today by the BJP national council,said that the BJP is now moving ahead as a party for the poor.
Addressing the BJP national council meet here, Shah said that during the general election the poor felt that the "BJP is their party (and) a tea seller (Narendra Modi) is going to be the prime minister."
"We got support from the poor," he added at the day-long meet being held at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
"Hum garibon ki party ke roop me badh rahein hain. (We are moving ahead as the party for the poor)," said Amit Shah who succeeded Rajnath Singh as the party president.
Amit Shah exhorted party workers to work hard to repeat the lok sabha performance in the coming assembly elections in four states- J&K, Jharkhand, Haryana and Maharashtra.
Expressing concern over deteriorating law and order situation in UP, Amit Shah said "Law and order situation in UP is a matter of concern because of "biased" attitude and "appeasement policy" of state govt."
Amit Shah, who was incharge of the party in Uttar Pradesh where the BJP bagged 71 of the state's 80 Lok Sabha seats, said that he was entrusted the task due to his capability.
He recalled that he began his career as an "ordinary worker in a booth committee".
Only in BJP even the most ordinary worker can rise to be the party President and Prime Minister, says Amit Shah in his first address as party chief.
Amit Shah said that BJP can bring "sushasan" (good governance) and bring the country out of "kushasan" (poor governance).
"The poll verdict is defeat of dynasty politics. People rejected appeasement and votebank politics," said Shah.
REminding party workers that a lot still remains to be done, Shah said "Work of strengthening BJP in many places still left; we cannot rule for long if party's reach does not expand."
BJP National Council today ratified Amit Shah's appointment as new party president.
Earlier, addressing the national council meet, outgoing BJP chief Rajnath Singh said that Amit Shah is suited for the position of the BJP chief due to his leadership in Uttar Pradesh that saw the party bagging 71 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state during the general election
Addressing the BJP national council meet here, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that "some people may wonder why Amit Shah (for BJP chief's post)?"
He said that when he was looking for someone to lead the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh, he zeroed in on Amit Shah.
He added that under Shah's leadership, for the first time BJP got 71 of 80 Lok Sabha seats while two seats went to a BJP ally.
He recalled that the BJP had just two seats in the Lok Sabha in 1984 and today it is the "biggest party".
"The credit goes to lakhs of workers... (and also) credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity."
Rajnath Singh said that BJP and Left parties are the only two parties inthe country which are cadre and ideology-based.
"We can say that the only cadre and ideology based party left is the BJP."
"Congress has neither ideology nor cadre," he added.
BJP's national council meet, the first after it won the Lok Sabha polls with a thumping majority, began here this morning.
The meet began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flag at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
A close aide of Modi, Shah took over as the president of the BJP July 9 after his predecessor Rajnath Singh was appointed the union home minister.
Registration for the meet began early in the day.
Satish Upadhyay, BJP head of the Delhi unitdelivered the welcome address and presented a momento to Modi.
The event will be rounded up with a speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
