New Delhi: The Ethics Committee of Parliament today recommended immediate expulsion of Independent MP and liquor baron Vijay Mallya the membership of the Upper House.

PTI Sources said the panel was unanimous in its decision that Mallya, facing a case of loan default of over Rs 9,400 crore, should no longer remain a member of the Upper House and found his reply to its notice unsatisfactory.

The committee has submitted its report before the Rajya Sabha today. A motion will now be introduced in the House and approved by it.

When panel Chairman Karan Singh was asked about the details, he declined to divulge the information saying that ‘being the head of the committee it will not be appropriate for him to announce a decision taken in its meeting’.

"Ethics Committee only recommends. The report (of the panel) is property of the House," Singh said.

Mallya had on Monday faxed his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, but the Chair refused to accept the same, paving way for his expulsion.

Ethics Panel of the Upper House, which had taken up the matter, had unanimously decided in its April 25 meeting that Mallya should no longer remain a member of the House and was planning to recommend his expulsion.

Mallya is wanted for defaulting bank loans to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore. He is an independent member from Karnataka, and his term ends on June 30. This is his second term in the upper house.

According to Parliament sources, during his tenure of almost 10 years as member of the Rajya Sabha, Mallya was declaring his assets and liabilities as "nil".

The government had last month revoked Mallya's passport after he failed to turn up for a probe into the loan default. This set in motion the process for the billionaire's possible deportation from Britain, where he is staying at present. His case was referred to the ethics panel by the Rajya Sabha chairman, after he fled the country in March.
