Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said that the government was making all efforts to secure the freedom of the Indian Army jawan in Pakistani captivity.

Chandu Babulal Chauhan (22) of 37 Rashtriya Rifles with weapons inadvertently crossed over to the other side of the Line of Control, the Army said in a statement yesterday.

“The government has taken note of the media reports that say our soldier is in Pakistan captivity… India will take up the matter with Pakistan,” the Home Minister said.

The Indian Army which stunned Pakistan with its surgical strikes at terror camps across the Line of Control has clarified that the soldier was not part of the operation.

News that Pakistan captured Chauhan came hours after India announced that it had on Wednesday night successfully conducted surgical strikes, killing more than 30 militants in PoK.

In a statement, Army said that such inadvertent crossing by soldiers and civilians are not unusual on either side, and they are returned through existing mechanisms.

Reports also said that the Army’s head of military operations, General Ranbir Singh, spoke to his Pakistani counterpart last night and demanded that the soldier be sent back.

Tension between India and Pakistan are on all time high after four terrorists had stormed an Army camp in Uri on September 18 and killed 19 soldiers.
