Budget Session: Hopeful of a breakthrough on GST in this session, says PM Modi

With the second leg of the Budget Session beginning today, the Prime Minister today expressed hope of a break in deadlock over the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which the government aims to rollout from July 1.

With the second leg of the Budget Session beginning today, the Prime Minister today expressed hope of a break in deadlock over the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which the government aims to rollout from July 1. 

Speaking ahead of the first day of the Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today thanked all political parties for showing a positive approach on making the tax reform a reality.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, the Prime Minister also said that he was hopefull of a breakthrough on the GST in the second part of the Budget session which commences from today.

He also called for a constructive debate and sought Opposition parties support in the passage of several crucial bills in the Parliament.

“There will be a detailed discussion on the Budget and I am sure the level of debate and discussion will be of good quality,” he said.

“I am also confident of a GST breakthrough in this session,” he added.  

Last week, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that the all states are on board and the GST will be implemented from July 1. 

Earlier, the government had set April 1 as the deadline to roll out the new tax reform that aims to replace all the indirect taxes slapped on goods and services by the Centre and the states.

The first part of the Budget session that commenced on January 31, concluded on February 9. The second leg of the session will conclude on April 12.
