New Delhi: Kamla Advani, wife of senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, passed away after suffering a heart attack today evening. She had complained of severe chest pain in the evening after which she was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where she breathed her last.

Kamla Advani, who was in her early eighties, had not been keeping well for the past few days. She was admitted to Delhi’s AIIMS last December as well due to fever, breathlessness and urinary tract infection.

She had breathing problems early in the morning following which she was rushed to AIIMS at about 5.30 am on Dec 1, 2015. She was admitted in the ICU of the hospital for observation.

L K Advani tied the knot with Kamla Advani in the year 1965. At that time, Advani was assistant editor of Organiser, helping Editor K R Malkani and was a member of national executive of Bhartiya Jana Sangh. Later, he became the president of the Delhi unit of Bhartiya Jana Sangh. After 1967 general elections, Advani became the leader of Delhi Metropolitan Council.

The 1947 partition forced Advani's family, like millions of others, to migrate to India. Kamla Advani had also migrated from Karachi.

They have two children, son Jayant and daughter Pratibha Advani.

Kamla Advani's birthday fell on November 22, while L K Advani's birthday fell on December 2. Last year, Advani did not celebrate his birthday because of his wife's illness. The couple used to celebrate their birthdays together on November 22, according to daughter Pratibha Advani.

Kamla worked at the General Post at Delhi and the Mumbai branch and was also a social welfare worker. She managed the Advani house flawlessly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his grief over her demise.

“Deeply pained & saddened by Kamla Advani ji's demise. She always inspired & motivated Karyakartas & was LK Advani ji's pillar of strength,” PM Modi said.

“I recall my many interactions with Kamla Advani ji. My thoughts are with the Advani family in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace,” he added.
