Lexington, Kentucky: Unseasonally cold weather in the U.S. has led to deaths and resulted in freezing temperatures in all 50 states.

Monday's subzero temperatures broke records for the date in Chicago, at minus 16, and Fort Wayne, Ind., where the mercury fell to minus 13.

Records also fell in Oklahoma and Texas, and wind chills across the region were  below 40  and colder.

Officials in Indiana, already struggling with high winds and more than a foot of snow, urged residents to stay indoors.

A 42 year old prisoner Robert Vick of Hartford escaped the minimum security Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday but biting cold  forced him to ask the motel staff to ring up police to say he wants to return to jail.

Robert Vick was serving a six-year sentence for burglary and criminal possession of a forged instrument at the minimum security Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington, Kentucky.

He escaped the minimum security Blackburn Correctional Complex on Sunday.

After escaping Vick apparently spent the night in a nearby abandoned farmhouse.

As the wind chills plunged the temperature in Lexington to minus 20 deg C, Vick felt the need to surrender.

According to Lexington police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts, he walked into a motel and told the clerk he wanted to turn himself in in order to escape the cold Arctic winds sweeping the US.
