New York: The shirt worn by the US Navy SEAL who killed dreaded Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in a daring raid in Pakistan was today put on public display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

The shirt was worn by the Navy SEAL during the night time raid in which he shot bin Laden to death in 2011 in the garrison town of Abbottabad.

The SEAL who took down Bin Laden wore the shirt as he fired the three fatal shots that killed the then All Qaeda chief.

His identity has never been revealed because of concerns for his safety and his name will not be included in the display of the shirt, which is brown with a black American flag on the sleeve.

"In honor of the courageous men and women who have put their lives on the line in war on terror - and in memory of all those we lost on 9/11 - a member of storied Seal Team Six has graciously donated the shirt he wore during the high-risk mission," Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who brokered the effort to secure the artifact, was quoted as saying by USA Today.

Ms Maloney said that the shirt is an important part of the story of September 11, 2001, from the horror of the terror plot to the eventual payback for bin Laden.

Little is known about the SEAL who gunned down bin Laden. In a 2013 interview with Esquire magazine, the SEAL remembered the fear that he felt before embarking on the mission and recalled writing what could have been his last letter to his family.

After he came home, his life has been a struggle. He has had trouble finding work and his wife separated from him. The AK-47 found next to the body of Bin Laden is on display at the CIA museum.
