Ottawa: Amid growing threat of terrorism worldwide, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for a UN resolution to unitedly fight against the menace and its support base as he condemned the terror attack on Canada's Parliament Hill last year.

“All those who believe in humanism should unite to fight against terrorism. There is a need for a UN resolution to fight terrorism,” Modi said at a joint press conference with his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper here.  He said the threat of terrorism is growing; its shadow extends over cities and lives across the world.

“Terrorism has transcended borders. We have to unite to fight terrorism. Terrorism has no race or colour. If we have to fight terrorism then the world should be given a message under the umbrella of UN,” said Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Canada in 42 years.

“We will deepen our cooperation to combat terrorism and extremism. We will also promote a comprehensive global strategy, and consistent policy and action against all sources of terrorism and its support,” he added.

Modi also condemned the terror attack on Canada's Parliament last year, saying the parliament is a temple of democracy and any attack on it is not just an attack on a building but on democracy.

“We in India felt Canada's pain when their city was struck by a senseless act of terrorism,” he said.

An armed attacker shot and fatally wounded a Canadian Forces member at the National War Memorial before being shot dead in Parliament's Centre Block in October last year.
