Tripoli: Libyan National Army warplanes Monday bombed Mitiga airport in Tripoli, causing all internal and international flights to suspend, according to military sources.

The airstrikes on the crucial air hub aimed to cut off "terrorist force Libya Dawn" supply lines, air force commander Brigadier Saqr Jeroshi said, adding that Libya's western and eastern sky is now fully secured by the national army jets.

Another security source said the attack was carried out by MIG-21 that off from Al-Watia military air base, some 150 km west of Tripoli, Xinhua reported.

In addition to Mitiga Airport, ports in Sirte, Misrata and Zuwarah might be their potential targets to strike the Islamist militants, the commander added. Mitiga is the only functioning airport after Libya Dawn destroyed Tripoli International Airport and occupied Tripoli in August.

The armed Islamist coalition has set up its own regime to confront the internationally recognised one.

The National Army along with some pro-government militia, has recently mounted several battles aiming to regain control of the lost cities and towns. During the last two weeks, fierce clashes in Benghazi have killed at least 356 people.

Earlier Sunday, Libya's National Army called on citizens to stay away from military targets as the army will launch operations to "liberate" the capital city.

Libya has witnessed a drastic escalation of violence after the 2011 turmoil which toppled the former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
