Dubai, July 16: The Dubai Municipality has released 70,000 fingerlings of Sobaity and Sha'am fishes in the Mamzar sea in a bid to preserve the environment and biodiversity.

The municipality's director general Hussain Nasser Lootah said the civic body chose these two types of fish considering their rapid breeding.

These fish have eggs in less than six months and proliferate in a maximum period of six to nine months. One egg of these fish contains approximately 2-3 million larva, which means they can quickly proliferate, feeding the marine environment with huge amounts of fish, he said.

The summer also does not pose a threat to them as they can acclimatise with the water temperature and water depth, he said.

He added the municipality will cooperate with the Emirates Association for Fishermen to release 150,000 to 200,000 fingerlings of different species of local and other fishes every year.
