Pyongyang, Jul 13: North Korea said on Saturday that two people died and about 760 were left homeless after torrential rains hit the central region of the country this week.

The state-run Korean Central News Agency said that the downpour damaged more than 150 houses and 1,720 hectares of farmland, according to a preliminary estimate.

The provinces that were hit the worst by the heavy rains are the three provinces that border with South Korea, including Kangwon province.

Part of Kangwon belongs to South Korea, divided by the demilitarized zone.

North Korea had reported deaths and damages to houses and land during seasonal monsoon rains in recent years.

KCNA said the weather forecast calls for as much as 400 millimeters (almost 16 inches) of rains in some areas for the next three days.

On Thursday, it said that more than 200 millimeters (almost 8 inches) of rain had hit dozens of North Korean towns over the previous three days.

Heavy rains also hit South Korea, delaying flights and damaging houses. But there were no reports of deaths.
