New Delhi: US President Barack Obama greeted citizens of Afghanistan on the occasion of country's 95th Independence Day.

The Presidential Palace Media Office said a letter was sent by Obama to his Afghani counterpart Hamid Karzai congratulating him and the people on this occasion.

Reiterating support to Afghanistan, the US President hailed the Afghan citizens who went in millions to vote and take part in a democratic process.

Afghanistan is celebrating its 95th Independence Day today to commemorate the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of August 19, 1919 that ended Britain's control over Afghanistan's foreign affairs. Britain fought three wars with Afghanistan in 19th and 20th centuries, but could not include Afghanistan in its empire.
