Washington: A group of hundreds of scientists have created largest 3D map of the Universe which is letting them better understand the mysterious dark energy.

Scientists have produced the biggest 3D map of the Universe ever made, which is showing more than a million galaxies up to 6 billion light years away.

As dark energy according to researchers is  a mysterious force that is causing the universe to expand faster. And this dark energy has always baffled scientists since its discovery and they are still not sure what this energy exactly is.

According to the scientist at University of St Andrews in Scotland Dr Rita Tojeiro, who co led this  international study, the largest 3D map was produced using the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III).

Now this extraordinary map will help enlighten astronomers as they will be able to detect the changes that are taking place throughout the Universe and how dark energy is affecting it.

Dr Rita Tojeiro, told media, “Over the last decade we have prepared and conducted the largest survey of the Universe yet.

“By measuring the positions of 1.2 million galaxies over one quarter of the sky, we mapped the three-dimensional structure of the universe over a volume of 650 cubic billion light years.

“Using this map we were able to make some of the crispest measurements yet of how dark energy is driving the expansion of the Universe,”he further added.

Another scientist from University of Portsmouth, Florian Beutler, told media, “If dark energy has been driving the expansion of the Universe over that time, our maps tell us that it is evolving very slowly if at all: the change is at most 20 per cent over the past seven billion years.”

The team of researchers  also studied about the  ‘pressure waves’ which travel through the Universe and are seen as sound waves that leave an imprint on the Universe.
