Obama’s farewell makes PM Modi world’s favourite leader on social media

Barack Obama making way for the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has paved way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to emerge as the world’s most followed leader on social media.

Barack Obama making way for the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, has paved way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to emerge as the world’s most followed leader on social media. 

Obama held the top spot till now, with almost 81 million Twitter followers on the social network, well ahead of any global leader.

PM Modi now has the highest number of followers on Twitter – 26.5 million – among all leaders of states on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+, according to PMO sources. 

Next on the list is the newly-elected US President Donald Trump who has 20.5 million Twitter followers. After them the PMO India account comes in with 15.5 million followers, and the POTUS account, with 13.6 million followers. 

The White House also has 13.4 million followers. The next leader in the list are the Dalai Lama, with 13.1 million followers, and the Pope, with 12.5 million followers.

Modi's followers on Twitter are 26.5 million, on Facebook the number is 39.2 million, on Google+, the number is 3.2 million, on LinkedIn, the number is 1.99 million, on Instagram it is 5.8 million and on Youtube it is 5.91 lakhs, the sources noted.

His Mobile App, which has close to 10 million downloads, is also the most widely used app for a political figure. 

The app consists of gamification features where peoplecan contribute in many ways and earn points. The Prime Minister regularly invites suggestions for various issues through his App and the top contributors in the App get to meet PM Modi.  

Through the recently launched BHIM app, PM Modi has given powers to the poor to send and receive payments without even visiting banks and go cashless as well. 

Also, Twitter campaigns like #Sandesh2Soldiers, #MyCleanIndia, #Incredibleindia, #SelfieWithDaughter are some of the campaigns run by the Government of India which received a massive response.
