Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today managed to barely scrape though in a divided Supreme Court verdict that ordered a joint probe into charges of corruption into the Panama Papers, but did not order his disqualification.

Pakistan’s top court today ordered the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the involvement of the premier and his two sons.

Had the Supreme Court delivered an adverse decision, the current leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) government would have faced possible disqualification from office, adding another story to the political uncertainty in the 70-year-old history of the Islamic country.

Since its inception, no government in Pakistan other than the erstwhile Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) completed its tenure democratically and handed over the leadership baton to the next regime. Nawaz himself was ousted from power in a military coup by erstwhile Pakistan president and military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

No wonder then that the verdict – though offering only temporary reprieve – should come as a breather for Nawaz Sharif.

Here is a list of PMs in Pakistan that were dismissed, dissolved, assassinated or overthrown by the powerful military:

Liaquat Ali Khan (August 15, 1947 to October 16, 1951)

The Muslim League leader was appointed as the first Prime Minister of Pakistan by the Governor-General in 1947. He was, however, assassinated in 1951.

Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar (October 17, 1957 to Dec 16, 1957)

The Muslim League was forced to resign in December 1957. His resignation came as a result of the President's refusal to convene a meeting of the Parliament to seek a vote of confidence.

On Oct 27, 1958, Iskander Mirza himself was deposed by Gen. Ayub Khan. The country’s first military coup followed a period of prolonged political instability. Ayub Khan combined the offices of the President and Prime Minister, becoming both the head of state and government. He created a cabinet of technocrats, diplomats and military officers. Khan remain in the office till March 25, 1969.
