Chennai: Indian Coast Guard ship Samudra Paharedar alongwith a team of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) scientists on Thursday recovered the crew module that re-entered the space and landed in deep sea on the Chennai coast.

ISRO had successfully conducted the flight valudation of the LVM3 Vehicle carrying the crew module, in order to study its space re-entry characteristics.

The crew module, weighing approx 3.73 tonne, lifted from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at about 9:30 am.  Within 15 minutes, Coast Guard Dornier aircraft that took off from Campbell Bay carried out initial surveillance and located the crew module and updated its position to Samudra Paharedar.

The ship on arrival, launched an oboard helicopter for carrying out pollution test of the area. The naval divers thereafter recovered the crew module braving the rough and difficult sea conditions. This was India's first tentative step towards sending a man to space.
