Thane: A 10-year-old orphan Sonu got a wrong blood group transfusion during a surgery to remove the gangrenous section in the intestine at Thane Civil Hospital on December 19.
Sonu was rushed to the Thane Civil Hospital on December 17 after he complained of difficulty in breathing and severe chest pain. Examinations revealed gangrene in his intestine and doctors decided to conduct a surgery for the removal of the same.
Sonu is under the state government's care at Bhiwandi Children's Remand Home and recovering now.
The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has sent a notice to the hospital about the licence of its blood bank.
Sonu's blood type is A positive, but he was given a transfusion of A negative
Experts say in an emergency, especially a person with A postiive blood type can be given A negative ransfusion as the two groups have a similar composition.
The FDA is investigating if Sonu was given the A negative because of a shortage or because of the staff's blunder.
