Ranchi: A newspaper hawker's son, Abhishek Ranjan beat the odds to grab the 18th position in the persons with disability (PWD) category in the IIT-JEE (Advanced) exam.

In the general category, Ranjan was ranked 16,095. The results were declared on Wednesday night.

Ranjan said that he aspires to become a civil servant one day.

"A big achievement for me... now the things will be normalised," he said.

He said that cracking IIT-JEE was his dream. The Ratu Road resident gave credit to his parents for this achievement.

In September 2009, Ranjan had met with an accident following which his one leg was paralysed.

After getting discharged from hospital, the young boy once against began his study. He said that his family, especially father motivated him to study hard.

"It took almost a year to recover from the accident," he said, adding that "Whenever I was depressed, my parents motivated me a lot. They supported me every time and the result is visible today.

Ranjan, a student of DAV Hehal, had scored 82 per cent in Class 12.

Ranjan's father Pramod Kumar Thakur said hat he is proud of his son having overcome all hurdles to achieve the goal.

The counselling for IIT is scheduled to begin from June 25.
