Chennai: A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to authorities not to allow idols of Gods to be placed on roadsides.

K R Ramaswamy alias Traffic Ramaswamy, in his plea, contended that Chennai City Police commissioner on the eve of Ganesh Chathurthi festival has passed an order that no idols should be more than 10 feet high and that they will not be allowed near traffic signals, schools or Hospitals.

Challenging the order, Ramaswamy submitted that in Maharashtra, idols are not allowed to be placed on the roadside.

The idols meant for religious rituals are allowed only inside Halls, he said and sought a direction to the corporation and police to initiate action against those who place idols of any God on roadside in violation of corporation rules.

He also prayed for a direction to electricity officials not to give power connection to such idols which are placed on the side of the roads.

The First Bench, comprising acting Chief Justice R.K.Agrawal and Justice M.Sathyanarayanan, adjourned the matter for further hearing on the September 23.
