Srinagar, Jan 6: Pakistan troops Sunday violated the bilateral ceasefire in Uri sector of the Line of Control (LOC) in the Kashmir Valley, defence sources here said.
"Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling at our positions in Hajipeer area of Uri sector on the LOC. Our troops responded with light weapons, following which the Pakistan shelling stopped," a defence spokesman told IANS in Srinagar.
"Some residential houses close to the LOC sustained damage in the shelling although no loss of life has been reported so far," said the spokesman.
According to the spokesman, the Pakistani shelling was intended to facilitate infiltration of militants into the Kashmir Valley from across the LOC, but timely response by the Indian troops thwarted the attempt.
In Islamabad, Pakistan Sunday accused Indian troops of killing a Pakistani soldier in the Kashmir region.
Indian soldiers violated the Line of Control (LoC) and attacked a checkpost in Bagh sector, Geo News quoted the army's Inter-Services Public Relations as saying.
The checkpost at Haji Pir sector is located about 200 km from Islamabad.
An official statement said the Indian firing wounded two soldiers, one of whom succumbed to his injuries. It said the Indian attack was repulsed.
LoC divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. India holds the southern two-thirds of the region and Pakistan the northern third.
