New Delhi, Mar 1: Over half of the digitization target of cable television has been achieved in 38 cities, which are set to turn to digital mode by March 3, a statement said here.

The 38 cities are to implement the digital addressable cable TV system as part of the second phase of the digitization process.

As per data, as on Feb 22, a total of 87.7 lakh set top boxes (STBs) have been installed in these cities against the target of 1.60 crore, registering 55 percent  digitisation.

Of the figure of 87.7 lakh, direct to home connections account for 40.7 lakh, whereas cable STBs accounted for 47 lakh, a statement said Friday.

The information and broadcasting ministry has set up a task force exclusively for Phase-II cities to oversee and monitor the digitisation process there.

It has also set up a panel to spearhead the awareness campaign in Phase-II.

“As part of the awareness initiative, all television channels have started to run a scroll, informing consumers about the deadline for cable TV digitization.

All India Radio has also started broadcasting radio jingles for creating awareness. Other initiatives include SMS campaigns, video spots and print advertisements,” the statement said.

In order to facilitate cable TV digitisation in these 38 cities, the ministry has already issued provisional registration to 30 Independent MSOs to operate there.
