Agra, Apr 5: A woman BJP worker was charred to death in a fire that engulfed her house here, with police yesterday saying that her postmortem report had shown nine stab wounds on her body.

Anju Sharma's postmortem report showed nine stab wounds on her body, leading to suspicions that she was stabbed to death and later her house was set afire to destroy  evidence of her being killed, police said.

Sharma, a social activist and former General Secretary of BJP women's wing, was found dead yesterday afternoon in the Trans Yamuna Colony of the city, police said.

The postmortem was carried out after midnight last night at the instance of Pramod Gupta, former city president of the BJP, who suspected foul play and asked the acting District Magistrate P Srivastava to get an autopsy done.

Sharma lived with her husband Deepak and two sons Gaurav and Mihir, but she was alone when the fire broke out, they said.

Neighbours saw that the upper storey of the house had caught fire and informed her husband, elder son, the police and fire brigade, which took hours to douse the flames.

As the house was locked from inside, the main door had to be broken open, police said.

The body was lying badly burnt in the bed, Circle Officer of Chhatta police station R K Singh said, adding, the cause of the fire was being investigated. Local BJP leaders have called for a thorough inquiry into the death.
