New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sadness over the capsizing of a boat in Ganga River in Varanasi.


"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sadness over the capsizing of a boat in Varanasi district. He prays for those missing in the unfortunate incident," a PMO statement said here on Tuesday evening.

At least 18 of the 40 people on Tuesday went missing after a boat carrying them capsized in the Ganga River at Betawar ghat near Shooltankeshwar area under Rohania police station in Varanasi.

The boat was going to Mirzapur from Varanasi, capsized in the Ganga River due strong flow of water in the afternoon.

Modi represents Varanasi in Lok Sabha.

Police divers and a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been pressed into service to locate and rescue any survivors.

The Ganga River is in spate these days and the water level in the region is rising menacingly every day.
