Ao Nagas  belong to Mokokchung District of the state. It is believed that they have migrated from Mongolia through south-east Asia to Nagaland.

The three day long annual festival, held in the first week of May was marked by songs that glorify the courage of tribal heroes.

Various traditional rituals were performed during the three day long festival.Peppy songs and dances on the vivacious music by the tribal men and women made the festival lively.

During this period, the village invited locals from other villages.

“We invite our neighbouring villages to give harmony and with our village relationship and also we used to have a great time from our forefathers and we maintain the peace among us among the different villages,” said Rongsenla, a villager.

The festival also helps the young Naga students to learn more about their culture and traditions.

Western tourists lauded the festival.  “It's an amazing experience to be able to, to come here to Nagaland and to see some of the amazing culture of Nagaland,” said Dustan, tourist from USA.

During the night, a ritual called ‘Sangpangtu' is organised in which campfire is lit and the well-dressed folks sit around it. They are served wine and meat, which is an intricate part of the festival.

This is the time when the women wear their best traditional garments and adorn themselves in beautiful jewellery.
