Faizabad: Muslims living in Mumtaz Nagar village of Faizabad will not be allowed to play lead role including Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, Lakhsman and Hanuman in Ramlila this year.

The reason why Muslims are kept away from playing main characters is that they eat meat. Last year also, Muslims were not allowed to take part in Ramlila.

Majid Ali, president of the Ramlila committee, told Times of India that the decision was taken after locals objected to meat eating Muslims taking part in Ramlila.

"Their objection was that since Muslims eat meat, they shouldn't enact the role of gods. When we came to know about the objections, we eased them out," he said.

Muslims, who eat meat, have been replaced by Hindu characters, he said, adding that the terms and conditions for these roles are that even if a Hindu, playing the lead character, is a meat eater, should turn vegetarian during Navratri.
