Mumbai police commissioner Sanjiv Dayal said on Thursday that the DNA sample of internet cable fixer Javed Rehman Sheikh has matched with the DNA sample found on dead girl Nusrat Sheikh only, and it has not matched with the DNA samples found on the previous two victims. Javed has been sent to 10 days police custody by a local court.
The police commissioner that police teams have been formed to hunt for the killer of two previous victims in Nehru Nagar, Kurla. Javed Rehman Sheikh's age will be 20 years next month and he studied till Class X. He used to work as an internet cable fixer and was staying in Nusrat's neighbourhood, Dayal said.
Javed's face is presently being kept secret as he will be facing a test identification parade soon, the commissioner said. The DNA sample matching was done by Forensic Science Laboratory.
Our probe will continue so long as the killers of the previous two victims in Nehru Nagar are not caught, Dayal said. He admitted that the sketch issued by the police earlier did not match with that of Javed. That person was different from this person, he added.
The commissioner also said police is yet to interrogate Javed properly. The DNA samples that were collect from Nusrat were those of her nail clippings and from other parts of her body. The post mortem report of Nusrat shouwed her stomach having undigested food, meaning that the murder took place soon after she had dinner, Dayal said.
Background:
On June 19, Police recovered the decomposed body of an 8-year-old girl who had been missing from her home since June 6. The deceased was identified as Nusrat Khurshid Alam Sheikh, a resident of Shramik Nagar slum colony in Kurla (East).
Around 9.15 am on June 19, a worker repairing the roof on the first floor of a chawl in Vatsalabai Nagar slum colony noticed a foul smell coming from an adjoining room which was locked. He got down and informed some residents who in turn informed the Nehru Nagar police.
When the police broke open the lock and entered the room, they found the decomposed, naked body of Nusrat. Her clothes were lying beside her. The police also found a nylon rope hanging from the ceiling.
Preliminary investigation revealed a one-and-a-half feet hole in the roof of this room. Police officials suspect that Nusrat's body could have been dropped into the room through this hole, with the help of the nylon rope, some five or six days ago.
According to the police, on the evening of June 6, Nusrat was playing outside her home while her mother was cooking dinner at home. The girl's father, who was the last to see her, had bought her ice candy when she had insisted, after which he left for work.
When she did not return home even by 6 pm, family members and neighbours searched for her and finally lodged a missing person complaint at Nehru Nagar police station.
Javed's arrest: The police sent over 70 samples of blood for DNA examination to the state run Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina, of which Javed's samples matched.
