New Delhi: India is at sixth position on the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), according to a latest report released by US-based think tank Institute for Economic & Peace (IEP).

It stated that India, which is ahead of even Yemen, Somalia, Russia and Egypt in the list, witnessed 624 terror incidents and 404 killings in 2013.

The study conducted by IEP accounted direct and indirect impact of terrorism in 162 countries which comprises 99.6 per cent of world's population.

It further said that India's terror quotient is 7.86 on a scale of 10 and is only marginally below Syria that clocked 8.12 with 217 incidents and 1,078 casualties.

War-torn Iraq with the terror quotient of 10 remains the worst sufferer. The Muslim-majority country reported 2,492 incidents and 6,362 killings. It is followed by Afghanistan (9.39), Pakistan (9.37) and Nigeria (8.58).

According to the report, it is apparent that violence by Maoist is the main reason behind India's high rank in the list as it is responsible for 2.2 per cent killings worldwide.

It also observed that activities related to terrorism in India increased by 70 per cent from 2012 to 2013.

It cited the number of deaths which increased from 238 to 404 in the mentioned period and the number of attacks going up with 55 more in 2013 than 2012.

It said that the countries with higher levels of terrorism perform significantly worse on the Pillars of Peace, a framework developed by IEP to assess peace factors.

The countries with the highest rates of terrorism also have more corruption, it added.
