New Delhi: Major cities including the national capital and Mumbai have been put on high alert following intelligence inputs that terror outfit al Qaeda may target public places, tourist spots, iconic buildings, temples and mosques.

According to several media reports, state governments have been asked to take precautionary measures following the threat.

The high alert in major Indian cities comes days after Paris terror attacks that killed 129.

Last year, al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri had announced the formation of an 'Indian wing' of the terror group to raise the flag of jihad across the subcontinent.

There are also reports that the terror outfit is seeking help of Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI to execute its plan.

According to Times of India, the 'Indian wing' al Qaeda doesn't have much of a footing here and thus it is in touch with ISI to carry out terror attacks. Also the ISI will have no problem in helping al Qaeda as it can easily disassociate itself from any strikes the organization carries out.

Yesterday, intelligence inputs had suggested that ISI may use underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's network in India to incite communal violence and it is already in touch with banned groups like Indian Mujahideen and SIMI.
