Madurai:  The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court yesterday ordered issue of notice to the Home Secretary, the DGP, the City Police Commissioner and others on a petition seeking action against some police officials, including a DSP, for allegedly protecting some culprits and causing a huge monetary loss to the petitioner.

Justice T.S.Sivagnanam also ordered notice to the Assistant Commissioner of Crime Branch, DSP Elangovan, Inspector Pethuraj and Sub-Inspector Sharmila.

The petitioner alleged he suffered business loss to the tune of Rs.4.5 crore due to the “continuous harassment” by the three police officials and police inaction.

He alleged one Ganeshkumar working in his firm as Manager had absconded swindling money.

Though a complaint was given to Elangovan who was the then Inspector (crime), no action was taken. Instead, he was harassed following a complaint given by another person Vinothkannan, he alleged.

He alleged Rs 20 lakh had been extorted from him.

A police inquiry had shown that the three officials were guilty, he claimed. Besides, they had not taken any action against Ganeshkumar who allegedly swindled the money and Vinothannan who extorted money through fake documents.

He said he had sent representation to the Commissioner, the DGP and the ADGP but no action had been taken. The judicial magistrate had taken the complaint against the officials on his file.

The petitioner also sought a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for allegedly harassing him and illegally detaining him and members of his family. He sought a direction to police to recover the money which was allegedly extorted.
