New Delhi: External Affairs minister Salman Khurshid yesterday donned the role of a poet to pay tribute to the December 16 gang-rape victim.

At a function to commemorate the Delhi "Braveheart", Khurshid's poetry was recited by Zila Khan. Vice President Hamid Ansari launched the music album 'Braveheart' brought out by Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust and Ustadgah Foundation.

The music album is a tribute to the girl child. Salman Khurshid has written poetry on that incident while it has been sung by Khan.

Addressing the gathering, Ansari said,"One year back a very brutal and pathetic incident happened which embarrassed every Indian."

"We have assembled here to pay tribute to the girl child," he said.

Terming the December 16 incident as "awful and terrible", Khurshid said, "This is a pain that I have felt because of 'Damini' and not just for what happened to her which was awful and terrible, but also the alienation we felt with the young people who felt let down. I had to say something to them, to Damini's parents and to her soul."

He said that the only way he could do it was through poetry and he was really lucky that Zila Khan sang it so beautifully.

"Whatever I had to say I said it in poetry, somebody else sang it. If you like it I will write more and if you don't I will stop writing," he added. Composer and singer Adnan Sami also enthralled the audience with his performance.
