Srinagar: Just three days after serial terror attacks by Pakistani militants in the Uri region of Baramulla district, brave voters lined up outside the polling booths to exercise their franchise in the third phase of five-phased assembly elections in the state.
The attacks failed to deter voters enthusiasm in the electoral process with 79 per cent polling recorded in Uri segment.
The deadly attacks on an Army camp on Friday claimed lives of 11 security personnel and six militants.
As per the data provided by Chief Electoral officer, Umang Narula, Chrar-i-Sharief, once a hotbed of terrorism, recorded the highest turnout with 82.14 per cent followed Uri.
In the last assembly polls, Uri had recorded 81.73 per cent voting.
Overall 58 per cent polling was recorded across 16 constituencies, including Beerwal where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is contesting.
The boycott call by separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani and threats from pro-azadi groups failed to deter voters with Sopore recording 30 per cent polling, up from 20 per cent in 2008.
Polling for the last two phases will take place on December 14 and 20 and counting will be done on December 23.
