New Delhi,Jan 21: The Supreme Court on Monday restrained tourists from using Trunk Road, which connects Port Blair with the Greater Nicobar, saying that it passes through a tribal reserve area inhabited by Jarawa tribals.

A bench headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi said that only government officials and people living there would be allowed to use the road.

The bench directed the administration to file an affidavit along with a detailed map indicating the area of the Jarawa tribals and posted the matter for further hearing on February 26.

The apex court had on July 3 last year had banned all kinds of commercial and tourism activities within five km radius around the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

It had upheld the notification to declare an area upto five km radius around the tribal reserve as ‘Buffer Zone' and prohibit entry of any person other than a member of aboriginal tribe into it.
