Mumbai: Amidst protests by its ally Shiv Sena against setting up a nuclear power project in Jaitapur, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that the project has now reached a stage from where there is no option of going back.

“The previous government had started this (Jaitapur nuclear power) project and brought it to a certain level. It is now at a stage where one cannot go back. You cannot indulge in national waste. The Shiv Sena has long been opposing the Jaitapur nuclear project. The BJP feels that India requires nuclear power and when the PM does something, he does it for the country's benefit. This project will be completed at any cost now,” Fadnavis told PTI.

The project was among the 17 pacts signed between the two countries during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Paris.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had said that the Maharashtra government should take into consideration farmers' concerns about the Jaitapur nuclear power project and that his party would support the people protesting against the project.

The Jaitapur project, where the French company Areva is setting up six nuclear reactors with a total power generation capacity of about 10,000 MW, has been stuck for long due to differences over the cost of electricity to be generated. Jaitapur has also witnessed massive protests over the setting up of the nuclear power plant.
