Bangalore: Monday night was a bit different for four of the police officers of Kalasipalyam police station who were following a dangerous gun dealer whereas their colleagues across the city were patrolling the huge crowd at the annual feast at St Mary's Basilica in Shivajinagar.

The team led by Inspector G.S. Anil Kumar was tailing the gun dealer who wanted to catch him red- handed. The team had followed him till City Market.

After following him in the market area that was crowded with people, they caught him around 8 pm in the evening. The suspect person Pankaj Roy was carrying a pistol and 16 round of ammunition for he did not resist his arrest.

The team had taken special permission to not to come near Shivajinagar but now they had something to put in their efforts.

When Roy was questioned about his involvement in the crime; he said that he was planning to sell the pistol to one of his client in the city with the help of his contact Shafi.  He got the pistol through Rakesh, another contact of his from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Roy used to work as a bodyguard for Aparajith Bhasak, a disreputable criminal. He used to work for a man who deal in guns and drugs, is involved in several other illegal activities and have been convicted for murder as well. Both of them belong to West Bengal and according to the situation they change their base repeatedly so that arrest could be avoided.

Before the murder of a travel agent K.R.A.P. Acharya at Hotel Ashoka in 2001 their illegal activities was not noted that much by Bangalore police.

Both Roy and Bhasak used to pretend as if they were tourist and with the help of their aid Jaswal they used to do the crime. The trio had approached Acharya seeking exchange of foreign currency for Indian currency. They then checked in the hotel and asked Acharya to come there with money. When Acharya arrived, he was offered a cold drink laced with poisonous substance. And when he was not in his senses, they tied his hands and legs before thrashing him away in the bathtub and left with cash worth Rs. 5 lakh.

After a long search the trio got arrested by the help of the city police in Kolkata, West Bengal. In 2008, Roy got out on parole. He jumped parole.

It was only in 2011 that the city police managed to arrest him for the illegal supplying of the arms and ammunition to anti-social elements that included a man who was associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The Bagalur police recovered six pistols and ammunition from him for which he was remanded in judicial custody. But, somehow, Roy approached the Supreme Court and got bail. To get hold of him again for his illegal activities the police had to wait till Monday night to get their hands on him again.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Labhu Ram, “they are trying to track down Roy's local contacts and the source of weapon and are even contemplating as well as  recommending to the authorities who are concerned to book him under the Goonda Act considering his criminal record.”
