New Delhi: In a first of its kind, offices of Delhi government will remain open on October 2, the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a national sanitation mission “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” across India on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Despite October 2 being a gazatted holiday, officials at Delhi government will be present in their offices cleaning up their offices and surroundings.

A circular in this regard has been issued to city admninistration by Centre instructing the department officials to be present on this day to take part in “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”

As a part of the Abhiyan, Delhi government will involve citizens, including members of RWAs, traders associations, market associations, industrial associations, youth, school children in the drive, said a Delhi government official.  The drive will also cover industrial areas and it is estimated that more than 600 trucks of rubble and garbage lying there will be removed during this period.

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been asked to make special efforts to clear garbage and rubble from its vacant plots, which are more than 1,000 in number.  It was also asked to pay particular attention to bio-diversity and other parks maintained by it.  There will be special emphasise on repair and renovation of toilets, providing sewer and water connection and construction of new toilets, specially for women, said the official.

Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has been instructed to ensure that night shelters in the city are kept clean and awareness is created among the homeless to keep them clean.

Sanitary Inspectors have been directed to supervise the work in their jurisdictional areas.

Education department will focus on sanitation of school toilets, especially those meant for girls by actively involving the local community and the school management committees. Health department will coordinate with hospitals and ensure cleanliness of their premises.
