New Delhi, May 1: Delhiites would soon have to pay more for travel in autorickshaws as the city government Wednesday approved a proposal for a fare hike of Rs.6 for the first two kms and raised the fare for subsequent travel by Rs.1.50 a km. Taxi fares were also increased.

The new rates would come into effect after a formal notification and the hike was proposed to factor in the recent hike in the price of compressed natural gas (CNG), an official said.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who chaired the cabinet meeting here which took the decision, said the new rates would be notified soon.

"The government will issue a notification and from then the fare will be increased," Dikshit said.

As per the cabinet decision, the minimum fare for the autorickshaws would be increased from the current Rs.19 to Rs.25 for the first two kms. Subsequently, the fare for each kilometre will be Rs.8 instead of the current Rs.6.50.

The Delhi government also increased the taxi fares.

"For the non-air-conditioned taxis, the commuters have to pay Rs.14 per km instead of the existing Rs.11. As for the air-conditioned taxis one has to shell out Rs.16 per km instead of Rs.13," a Delhi government official said.

The Delhi government last raised the fares of autorickshaws and taxis in June 2010.
