New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has finally decided to announce the implementation of One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme for ex-servicemen.

It is believed that the government will announce its decision before the Bihar assembly poll notification.

The government doesn't want to give any chance to the Opposition to deter its image in the polls and hence, sources, said that the announcement of the dates of the Bihar polls seems to be the cut-off point for a resolution of the OROP issue.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who met protesting ex-servicemen yesterday, also set out the time frame saying the announcement will be done before the model code of conduct kicked in.

The RSS, at its three-day coordination meet with the top ministers on Wednesday, asked for speedy implementation of OROP to end to the 80-day long strike by ex-servicemen.

The Sangh also suggested the government to form a commission to look into the issues on which consensus has not been reached.

It is also believed that government will consider 2013-14 as the base year for calculating pension and will do the revision at an interval of five years. But the agitating veterans have expressed their dissatisfaction saying they want yearly or two-yearly revision.

OROP basically means that retired soldiers of the same rank, who have retired after serving for the same length of service, will receive the same pension, irrespective of the date/year of their retirement.

There are around 24 lakh ex-servicemen in India and around 6.5 lakh widows who will benefit if OROP is implemented.
