Srinagar: Curfew continued for the third day on Monday in Shopian town of Jammu and Kashmir, where four people were killed by security forces Saturday, authorities said.

Shops, educational institutions and banks remained closed for the third day, and private and public transport were off the roads in the town as police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in riot gear patrolled the town to maintain law and order.

Businesses and transport also remained closed in the adjacent Pulwama town for the third day Monday.

On Saturday, four people were killed in Gagaran area of Shopian district, 54 km from here, when guerrillas attacked a CRPF camp, according to CRPF and police sources.

Police said two of the slain people were guerrillas from whom arms were recovered, while the other two were civilians. But families and locals said all the four killed were civilians.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and separatist groups said all the slain people were unarmed civilians.

Union Minister for Renewable Energy and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah told reporters that no inquiry was being ordered into the Shopian incident for the time being.

"How many inquiries will we hold? Let the Kishtwar inquiry be completed first," Abdullah said.
