Kolkata: The West Bengal government yesterday set up a Joint Monitoring Committee to identify areas of excessive traffic snarls in the city and suggest appropriate measures to overcome problems, state's transport minister Madan Mitra said here yesterday.

Expressing concern over excessive traffic jams, particularly during school hours and peak office hours in the city, Mitra said that the JMT would work in ten groups to identify the areas and problems and suggesting procedure to solve them.

Stating that some steps had already been taken by the state government to reduce traffic congestion in the city, Mitra said that major roads would be kept free from parking cars and other vehicles.

In some cases bus depot and terminus would also be relocated for better traffic control, he said.  Drive against illegal poolcars would also continue in the metropolis and around to keep the city free from traffic congestion, he said.

The minister also warned of stern action against bus strike, if the bus operators observe it on September 19 and 20 demanding hike in bus fares.  The state government would discuss the demands raised by the bus operators in an appropriate time, he said.
