Chandigarh, Jul 13 : Strongly condemning the molestation of a girl in a busy area in Guwahati, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today said nobody should make light of such serious incidents.

“Every incident of molesting a woman is condemnable...  anyone who tries to make light of the incident is condemnable.  Nobody should make light of the incident of molesting a woman or molesting a child,” he told reporters here.

He made the remark when asked to comment on Assam DGP's statement that police is not like an ATM machine which can be present at the crime scene the moment one inserts a card in the machine.

Chidambaram said he would get in touch with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and find out what action has been taken in the case.

“Now that you (media persons) have brought the matter to my notice, I will certainly find out from the (Assam) Chief Minister what action he will take in the incident,” he said.

On Guwahati SSP's comment that the incident has been raked up by the Delhi media, who sweep under the carpet cases of rape of girls from North East in the national capital, Chidambaram said, “Every molestation incident is condemnable ...such condemnable incidents happen all over the country.”

Three youths were arrested in connection with the case which happened in front of a bar on Guwahati-Shillong Road on July 10.

The girl had entered into a brawl in the bar with her friend and following an altercation some youths attempted to molest her. The matter led to a public outcry after a video of the shocking incident was uploaded on Youtube.
