Mumbai : A cable line connecting all three Kurla rape-murder victims' homes, as also the buildings where the first two bodies were found, led the cops to Javed Shaikh, the rapist-murderer involved in the third case, reports Mumbai Mirror.

Javed, an employee of Swastik Cable, which delivers Internet and TV signals into thousands of houses in Kurla's densely populated Nehru Nagar, is now being questioned in the other two cases too. Seven of his colleagues at Swastik Cable  have also been detained.

The cops began watching Javed and his colleagues after the second victim's body was found on the terrace of the Nehru Nagar police quarters. “The idea was to draw a list of people who would have easy access to these buildings – a list of newspaper vendors, electricians, milk vendors and cable connection providers was drawn up and their blood samples were sent for DNA profiling,” said an officer with Nehru Nagar Police Station.

By the time the third rape-murder victim's body was found on June 19 and pressure built on the police, the investigators had found a common thread, a cable to be precise, running though the three cases.

“The Nehru Nagar police quarters, where the second body was found, had a Swastik cable connection. The cable also passed over the site of the two other murders – the locked shanty at Vatsalatai Nagar, where Nusrat's body was found, and Sai Shraddha building, where body of fist victim Sania Siddiqui was found,” the officer said.

Since Javed and his colleagues maintained Swastik's cable connections in this area, they were all put under watch,” the police officer said.

On June 26, however, the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalina informed the police that Javed's DNA samples did not match those taken from the bodies of the first two victims. They, however, said that the DNA samples obtained from the first two victims were different from those from the third victim.

The police then asked the FSL to match Javed's and other DNA samples with those obtained from the third victim. The result was positive. Javed's DNA type matched with that of the sample collected from the body of Nusrat Shaikh, the third victim.

The cops had their first real breakthrough in the Kurla rape-murders.

Confirming that messy cable lines helped them reach the rapist-murderer, Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said, “Yes, it was the same cable company that provided connection to all these places. We are now confirming if it was Javed who had installed all these connections.”

Javed's employer Rajiv Patil is shocked that one of his employees is involved in the gruesome rape-murder.

“Javed has been working with me since the past one and a half years. He attends all my customer queries and his behaviour has never been suspicious. He used to reach office by 10.30 am and leave office not before 9 pm. When we asked him to come for the DNA test, he readily agreed. That he is a killer, comes as a shock to us.”

But Javed's mother Razia says her son is not a murderer.  “My boy is innocent. He will be set free later just like Mohammad Ajmeri Shaikh, who was also framed by the police. The cops are under pressure to solve the case.”

Mohammad Wahid, his brother, added, “He used to go directly to office and return at 9 pm, after which he never left home.”
