Bangalore: Delicate and soft, this little premature baby girl was born on May 15, 2014. She is actually a blessed baby to be alive.

Her parents welcomed her before the actual time of the birth (i.e actual date of the delivery) and she just weighed 470 gram.  A medical miracle and her parent's prayers and of course the destiny welcomed her on her parents lap.

Without all of this. it was difficult for this blessed baby to survive.  But, the foremost credit goes to the nurses and the team of specialists who gave continuous care and attention to this girl child.

As on today, she weighs around 2 kg. According to the doctors of Manipal Hospital, it's a phenomenal thing that the baby has braved all odds.

The baby has become a bundle of joy not only to her parents but to the medical fraternity as well who have achieved the impossible thing. The premature baby was rushed from Meenakshi Nursing Home to Manipal Hospital who now is a healthy baby.

With premature children, it is important to ensure that they are getting adequate oxygen, nutrition and warmth.

“We are cautiously optimistic there will be no complications in the future. However, she will need to have regular heath check-ups and close monitoring till she turns two,” said, Dr. Praveen Venkatgiri, Neonatologist of Manipal Hospital.

It was not an easy task to achieve as all the tasks were difficult to achieve. Her immature lungs had made breathing difficult for her. Her soft, delicate baby skin was so feathery that it was a challenge to maintain her body temperature at normal degree.

Moreover, the baby girl was not able to tolerate milk fed with the help of food pipe and intravenous infusion with high protein and fat solutions for a long time too was given to her.

According to the Chairman and Head of the Department of Neonatology, Manipal Hospitals, Dr Karthik Nagesh, “securing venous lines to give intravenous nutrition was a challenge. Further complicating her nursing and nourishment was she suffered from life-threatening infection and low blood sugar,” he added.

To Nasreen Banu, 37, who has undergone abortions twice, the child meant a lot to her.

Babies weighing less than 2,500 gm are termed low birth weight and those under 1,000 gm extremely low birth weight whereas an average healthy newborn's weight at birth is around 3,000 gm.
