Srinagar: Army today launched an operation to rescue people from hundreds of villages flooded due to heavy rain, while rescue teams evacuated about 2,000 people to safety.

“The Chinar Corps launched Operation Sahayata (help) to rescue people from hundreds of villages inundated due to incessant rains and overflowing of river Jhelum,” an army spokesman said.

He said 40 columns of army personnel were deployed in various parts of the valley.

“Nearly 2,000 people were rescued during the day-long operations,” he added.

According to the reports, a large number of people have already been taken to safety and non stop effort is made to extricate people caught in critical conditions.

1RR is operating 8 columns in Villages Sangam, Hasan Pura Bagh, Shamsipura, Turktachlu, Khudwani, Ledwani, Howrah and Quimoh.

Nearly 80- 100 (around 15 families in Turktachlu and Shamsipura) people rescued and shifted to unaffected villages.

Sand bags distributed to affected villages. 25 children and 30 adults were also rescued using tyre, tubes, ropes at muslim mohalla, KP road, Anantnag.
