New Delhi: A 21-year-old Assamese student was allegedly beaten up by locals in south Delhi's Amar Colony when he was trying to break the lock of someone else's house, mistaking it to be his own, apparently in an inebriated state.

The youth, identified as Arbazuddin, hails from Guwahati and had been living in Delhi since the last 2 years. He has suffered fractures in his limbs and jaw in the incident, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours of March 5 when Arbazuddin came back home and tried to open the lock of a house which was not his own. When the key didn't work, he tried to break the door and get in, a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, hearing the sound the original owner and neighbours woke up. Thinking that he is a thief they thrashed him, he said. "We got a PCR call around 1:30 AM from locals that they have caught a thief. A team rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital," he added.

His address was found to be in the same locality. Both the houses were on the first floor and the youth probably went into the wrong house apparently in an inebriated condition, police said.

Police have registered a case on his statement and further investigations are on. The CCTV footage of the area is being checked to verify claims of both the parties.
