New Delhi: The soul of India lies in its villages as still around 60% of population inhabit the rural parts of the country so it will be impossible for India to become a developed nation unless its villages develop.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious Smart City project, government will soon launch an innovative scheme for the Gram Panchayat- India's lowest planning unit

Named as Beacon Panchayats- this project will be launched in at least one Panchayat in each state, these Panchayats would serve as a model for the rest of the Panchayats to emulate and would showcase how an ideal Panchayat functions.

The beacon panchayats would not only have  physical infrastructure but also proper social development.

According to Economic Times, the government would develop 50 gram panchayats and 15 block panchayats as Beacon panchayats all over India.

The Beacon Panchayats will be chosen after scrutinising their performance on Modi government's signature schemes like Swachch Bharat Abhiyan and Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme, frequency of meetings of gram panchayats, efficacy of intervention by gram panchayat, enrolment rate in schools, infant mortality rate, functioning of anganwadis and other facilities.
