New Delhi: Delhi wastes upto 2.5 lakh litres of fuel every day due to vehicle idling, according to a recent research released by IIT Delhi and US-based Desert Research Institute.

The study says that the vehicles in Delhi travel at less than 4km per hour for almost 25% of their commute time. As a result, vehicles in the capital don't run but crawl for a considerable part of their travel time.

If a million cars run at similar speed in Delhi, they will waste around 2.5 lakh litres of fuel every day while idling at traffic.

According to the research published recently in the Elsevier journal, Travel Behavior and Society, around 68% of the vehicles in the capital are less than five years old while only 2% are more than 15 years old.

The study also reveals the average age of most of the vehicles in the city is around 4.4 to 4.7 years.

The research team also collected the data using a “floating car method”, where 10 professional car drivers, 20 professional three-wheeler drivers and three researchers using two-wheelers drove around the city from 6am to midnight.

The study was done for cars (covering a distance of 2160 km), three-wheelers (covering a distance of 1210 km) and two-wheelers (covering a distance of 650 km).

It was found that the idling time was 24% for cars , 18% for three-wheelers, 37% for buses and 20% for two-wheelers .
