One more jawan trapped in avalanches in Ladakh district’s Batalik sector succumbs to injuries this morning, taking the death toll to three.

There were five soldiers at the post when multiple avalanches triggered by heavy snowfall hit an army post in the Batalik sector. Two of the five soldiers were rescued earlier.

The Kashmir Valley witnessed incessant rain and untimely snowfall in the plains yesterday, leading to a flood-like situation.

According to Army's Udhampur headquartered Northern Command, late last evening, unprecedented snowfall triggered multiple avalanches, a post in Batalik sector buried.

"Army has deployed specially trained and well equipped Avalanche Rescue Teams to rescue the remaining three soldiers,” it said.

This year, in January, at least 15 soldiers were killed after two avalanches hit a military post and a patrol along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Between 2014 and 2016, 58 soldiers died in natural calamities.
