Four people including two soldiers were killed today in Nowgam sector of the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, when the Army foiled an infiltration attempt.

Defence sources said that the gun fight erupted when a group of heavily armed militants was intercepted in Nowgam sector, 120 km northwest of Srinagar, during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

"Army troops challenged a group of intruding terrorists earlier in the day. The heavily armed terrorists opened fire at the soldiers," they said.

Two terrorists were also killed in the operation.

The operation continues although the infiltration attempt has been foiled, they said, adding that the identity of the slain soldiers and militants could not be established immediately.

Two AK rifles, a grenade launcher and other ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site.

This is the second major gun fight in this sector in past few days.

Earlier on July 26, four Pakistani militants were killed and another militant Bahadur Ali, alias Saifullah, of Lahore was arrested alive.

There has been an increase in infiltration bids this year by terrorists from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir.

MoS for Home Affaris Hansraj Ahir had recently told the Parliament that 54 such "successful" incidents were reported in the first six months this year.

There were 90 infiltration attempts till June 30 in comparison to 29 attempts in the corresponding period in 2015, he had said.
