New Delhi: The brutal rape and murder of a law student in Perumbavoor, Kerala, found echo in Rajya sabha today with BJP and CPM alleging the Kerala government for completely failing in protecting the Dalit girls in the state.

"More clear vigil is needed on part of the police and the public at large has to see that our sisters and daughters get protection,” CP Narayanan of CPM said.

Slamming the state government for failing to protect dalit girls, BJP's Tarun Vijay said," This is a repeat of the Nirabhaya case."

The neighbour of the 30-year-old girl, who went missing since the incident happened on April 28, was arrested from the northern district of Kannur.

Police said that she was raped and killed when she was alone in her single-room home on the bank of an irrigation canal. The neighbourhood came to know about the murder when her mother, serving as a domestic help, returned home after day's work. Her father had abandoned the family when she was a child. Her only sister, a divorcee, is living with her maternal grandmother in a nearby village.

Close on the heels of the Perumbavoor rape, a 19-year-old second year BSC nursing student was  allegedly gang-raped at Ayanthi in Varkala. She had gone with an autorickshaw driver, who was known to her, in his vehicle.

Two of his friends also got into the vehicle later. They then took the autorickshaw to a deserted spot and allegedly raped her.

The girl was in a state of shock and suffered from fits when she was found by some people who rushed to the vehicle on hearing her cries for help.

She has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

The incident comes days after a Dalit law student was raped and murdered in Ernakulam district.
