With the public anger rising in Kashmir against mysterious incidents of braid chopping, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising separatists including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik have called for state-wide protests on Friday.

In a statement released today, the JRL appealed to the people of Jammu, Poonch, Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley besides those residing in PoK to hold mass protest rally against the ‘conspiracies’ being hatched by state government to ‘change’ the demography of the border state. The statement added that braid cutting is an attack on dignity and a war weapon against women.

It also asked people to stand against these devilish acts and resist against elements including RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Nirmal Singh who often deliver shameful and provocative statements.

The JRL has also called for a rally in Polo Ground Srinagar on October 14 to protest against the government’s anti-Kashmir policies.

Yesterday, a youth was beaten up mercilessly in Baramulla district on the suspicion that he was the braid chopper who had terrorised south Kashmir in the past few days, Police, however, said that he turned out to be the lover of a local girl.

On Sunday, state police had announced a reward of Rs 6 lakh for anyone helping in nabbing the culprits. Earlier, the police had announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh.

Incidents of braid chopping started in south Kashmir quickly spreading to other places including central and northern districts of the Valley.

Last week, the police caught three persons alleging that they may have been responsible. They were later freed because no evidence was found against them.
